Denim Done Right
Geesh, it’s our intention to publish the monthly blog at the beginning of each month, but as the holidays creep ever closer, time just gets away from us. Daily shipments of new fall styles, a buying trip to Los Angeles, an upcoming jewelry trunk show, a special event in November with a dear friend and customer, and planning for our annual holiday bash have us hustling. We sat down together recently and decided it was time to write about one of the timeless mainstays of style and our business, denim. Interestingly, fashion insiders predicted the death of denim during the height of the pandemic. People, lots of them, were opting for softer fabrics with forgiving (expandable) waistlines. Sweatpants and leggings were the bottoms of choice during the lockdown and well into the pandemic. But as we shopped for Fall ‘22, one thing was clear; jeans are back! We thought you’d like to hear about the new denim shapes we’ll be offering and we’ll give some style tips on how to wear them.
Barrel Jean
This style is causing a stir among the fashion forward. With a high waist and exaggerated oversized leg that bows out and tapers at the ankle, at first appearance it seems like a style suited only for runway models or celebrities. Citizens of Humanity calls their version the Horseshoe Jean and it is surprisingly easy to wear. With the voluminous bottom, it’s best to wear something either form-fitting or cropped at the waist. For a casual look try a waist-length jacket and suede booties. Or show your preppy style with an argyle sweater and chunky loafers.
Boyfriend Jeans
As if borrowed from your guy, the boyfriend jean is cut straight up and down, much like men’s jeans, and meant to be worn slouchy. We think the MOTHER Ditcher is a near-perfect version. Wear your normal size slung on your hips with a sweatshirt and high-top sneakers or size up and cinch with a belt at your waist and wear with high-heel ankle boots and a beautiful silk blouse.
Flares
With a small bell and a slim fit through the rest of the leg, the MOTHER Hustler Patch Pocket in stretch denim is both flattering and comfortable. This retro style looks great with patent leather ankle boots and a silky blouse, or dress it down with a simple tank worn under a plaid shirt or jacket.
Straight-leg
This is an excellent alternative to your skinny jeans. Often cut in 100% cotton, this style usually sits at or just below your natural waist. With a leg that’s the same diameter from hip to ankle, the silhouette is flattering and modern. Our Moussy Loews Button Fly looks great with a cropped, chunky-knit sweater and some lug-soled boots, or for a dressier look pair with a blazer and heels.
With the resurgence of jeans as a wardrobe staple, and with so many great new shapes and washes to choose from, we want to give you a little nudge to think about updating your denim. Yes, there is still a place for your favorite skinny jeans in your style rotation. But it’s also time to break out of your rut. And by all means, do get out of your sweatpants. It’ll make your feel good.
